History of Birkman

Roger Birkman PhD was interested in how behaviours resulted from the way in which an individual perceived the world around them. His interest in individual differences in behaviour and perception dated back to his time as a pilot and pilot instructor during World War II.

Dr Birkman was particularly struck by the impact of interpersonal and visual misperceptions on pilot performance and student learning. He saw that different perceptions of organisational goals and job assignments resulted in contrasting and sometimes discordant behaviour.

 Post-war, Dr Birkman utilised empirical techniques (predominantly workplace interviews and observations) to create the Test of Social Comprehension. This tool measured the human characteristics he saw influencing perceptions, behaviours and motivations in the adult working population. The first Birkman Method of assessment was born.

A subsequent collaboration in the sixties with the Statistician and Psychometrician, Roy Mefferd, saw The Birkman Method capitalising on the increasing power of computer-based analyses. Mefferd had previously worked with Raymond B. Cattell (creator of the 16PF) and his experience was invaluable in revising The Birkman Method using factor analysis.

Since then, Birkman International has drawn on the expertise of many talented Psychometricians to hone the sophistication of the instrument. 2008 saw a major revision that updated The Birkman Method to current standards, combining techniques such as Structural Equation modelling with Classical and Item Test Theories.

Birkman has been around longer than many other assessments and organisations who used Birkman in its very early days are still clients today. This long life has meant that The Birkman Method has been refined and updated for over sixty years to produce one of the finest, most adept personal and professional assessments available.
